Biography

A bit about myself, what brought me here, and my interests and hobbies.

Hi there!  I'm Tiffany Prosser and I'm a web developer and designer specialising in ASP.net based sites in particular the Umbraco CMS.

I live and work in Leicester in the UK. My job is based at Leicester City Council and my primary responsibilities are the daily upkeep and maintenance of our many websites and web apps as well as designing / developing / deploying new sites.

Now you're first question visiting these pages may be.. why is it called Envy and why have I used the character Envy from the movie Scott Pilgrim plastered all over this site?

The second part of that question is quite simply because she's awesome and one of my favourite movie characters.  I think she exudes cool and strength as a character - looks great and being a musician myself I am drawn to her as something to aspire too - despite her slightly evil persona from the movie.

The first part of the reason why this blog is called Envy is due to my aspirations as an Umbraco web developer and my feelings towards those I see as having achieved some kind of 'Holy Grail' in the world of Web Development.

Comparatively, I've come to the world of Web Development as a career choice relatively late - being mid-40's of age, and although I have been building sites since my teenage years in the 1990's, never did it occur to me that working on web development as a career choice would be something worthwhile or that I could achieve any kind of success from it.

Zoom forward 20 or so years and I find myself in the position of working towards a goal of establishing a career as a web developer that I can be proud of the things I have achieved and look forward to a bright future developing applications and software that bring benefit to whomever may be using it.

History of me

As I worked in the role of Research and intelligence, I was continually confronted by the need for web development skills in order to facilitate the presentation and dissemination of complex sets of information.  I had made a strong name for myself as a bit of a guru in infographics and data visualisation and was constantly experimenting with new ways of analysing and presenting information.

When the team was disbanded by the council in 2014, I was made redundant and was on the lookout for new work.  A job opportunity as a Web Architect came up within the Council and as I was already working extensively with websites and web technology I took the opportunity to apply and was pleased to find that my application was succesful.  This is officially where my career would start working exclusively with websites and web technology.

Although I perhaps didn't know it at the time, this was gearing me up for moving into a career in web development.

One example of the kind of application I developed used the Office of National Statistics API that would expose data on Census population that I could use to dynamically populate my application dashboard that I had written using the d3.js charting library to create interactive infographics.  It enabled users to select parts of a map that would then update the datasets in the dashboard whilst also provided some aggregate data used to understand the impact that Social Welfare reforms - in particular Universal Credit, would have on the population of Leicester.

Working with Umbraco

The core websites at Leicester City Council are built on Umbraco CMS - the open-source content management system that offers flexibility and customisibility beyond that of its main competitors.

I try my hand at a lot of things – particularly creative. I’m an artist / illustrator and I really enjoy using my pen and tablet to create art from my sketches using tools such as the Adobe Creative Suite, ArtRage and Manga studio.

I’ve been working on websites since the mid to late 90’s but only really as a hobby. Some of my earliest sites were in support of the various clans and guilds I’ve been in as a gamer (Counterstrike, Warcraft, Dota) mainly as frontends for hosting forums or gaming news feeds.

have had a number of roles of which using similar skills have been useful, particularly in presenting and analysing research and intelligence information.

I play guitar in a band called Courtney Askey. Kind of Lana Del Ray mixed with My Bloody Valentine with scatterings of The National and Interpol. We’re signed to a small album label and our current album called Oh! Softly Goes is available on Spotify and Itunes. We’re currently writing new songs for a new album which we hope to have recorded this year. Have a listen!
